Syracuse Inner Harbor to host Wednesday night free music series

Dickey Betts will bring his band Great Southern for a free show July 15 at the Syracuse Inner Harbor.

Updated at 3:15 p.m. on Tuesday, March 24: It didn't take long for the Lakefront Development Corporation to line up another weekly music series for the Syracuse Inner Harbor.

Joe LaGuardia, executive director of the LDC, this afternoon announced details for a Wednesday night series that will start June 10 and run through Aug. 5. The free admission-series will be promoted jointly by Strategic Partnership Services, which also puts on Taste of Syracuse, and Showtimes, which presents concerts and provides food services at events.

Three national acts were announced just now for what they're calling the Hump Day Concert Series. The Georgia Satellites on June 10; Dickey Betts and Great Southern on July 15; and the Outlaws on July 29. Other national acts may be announced. Tribute bands will perform on the other Wednesdays. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m., and food and beverages will be served.

LaGuardia said discussions for the new series started about the same time WaterBanks Events Co. announced it was moving its weekly Thursday night concert series from the Inner Harbor to the Regional Market. That series, which features Central New York bands, will start May 14. WaterBanks announced on March 5 that it was leaving the Inner Harbor after three years because it had outgrown the site. Stacey Waterman and Mike Banks also said it will be less expensive to stage it at the Regional Market.

Marc Albert, owner of Showtimes, said he plans to use the existing stage set up at the base of the concrete amphitheater as much as possible, but may move the stage to the bigger, grassy field that adjoins the harbor for nights the national acts play.

The Wednesday night slot will not have competition from Party in the Plaza. Bill Cooper, president of Updowntowners, which presents that weekly free music series, said today that it will move to Thursday evenings. Cooper said the site is not yet set. It may or may not return to Federal Plaza. He said the series also will have a new name. He expects an announcement in about a month.

LaGuardia said this series will have similar financial arrangements to those with WaterBanks, with the promoters being responsible for paying for "normal costs" for city police, other security and event staging instead of paying a rental fee. The promoters make money by charging for food and beverages. Without revealing a figure, Albert said he considers the weekly cost to be "reasonable."

Looking out over the harbor, Levine said she's won over the the beauty of the site.

"I think there's something about doing an event by the water," she said. "We're inside so much in the winter, to be near the water makes you feel good in the summer in Syracuse. People are just drawn to be near the water."

LaGuardia said the LDC will refurbish hitching pylons so the maximum amount of boats will be able to moor at the harbor for the series.
