Eating fresh, local (even organic!) Power: Tulsa agricultural market opening in April

Eat Fresh, Local (Even Organic!) Food: Tulsa Farmers' Markets Opening in April

The AT crew loves to eat locally, so we're happy to promote Tulsa-area farmers' markets. The one we visit the most is the Cherry Street Farmers' Market, which will have it's 2009 opening in a couple of weeks.

Here's their announcement:

Our farmers' market vendors have been busy preparing for the upcoming market season. The Cherry Street Farmers' Market opens April 11th from 7 - 11 am. Lisa Brandborg will manage both [the Saturday and Wednesday] markets and is looking forward to the 2009 season. There are new vendors who promise to add interesting vegetables and products to the expanding market selection.

The special events have been planned along with educational demonstrations. There will be music on the Gray Snail patio Saturday mornings. As many Tulsa "green shoppers" will attest, local farmers' markets are a great way to find organic and locally grown produce and products, everything from veggies to honey, eggs, meat and more. Plus, they have music at the Saturday market. Check them out here.

From the farm to your doorstep in just a few clicks

Stockton-based Fromthefarm.com is making it easier for consumers to buy local farm goods.

The Website ships agricultural products directly from the farms to your home whether you are in Orange County or any other place in the country. Online orders go directly to the growers, who then ship that product to you.

"This is a one-stop shop platform for people that love farm products," said Dean Davis, general manager of the company. "We are trying to get the flavor back in the food we eat. It has a farmer market feel to it."

The site sells vegetables, meat, flowers, vine, dairy food, organic food and other products. All these products are said to be 100 percent quality-guaranteed and do not go bad by the time they reach your house. They do not take back the products, but depending on the circumstance, they will give you a refund, Davis said. California growers include cheese, rice and citrus farmers.

Still, delivery of the foods comes at a hefty price. Michigan red or McIntosh apples (20 count) cost $28.95 a box. General shipping charges are around $8.99 or less, depending on the food item. Most deliveries take couple days, but some products like flowers are sent overnight.

Why We Drink Organic Milk

Why We Drink Organic Milk

Organic food is a fast growing industry, with organic milk leading the way. In the $10.2 billion dollar organic market, organic milk is seeing a healthy 23% annual growth rate. Ever since we started Andrew on milk, it has always been organic.

I was drawn to organic milk after reading that the cows are not fed synthetic hormones, antibiotics or pesticides. I am always weary about my son ingesting all of those extra hormones and chemicals, it doesn̢۪t seem natural to me. Although there is no consistent research that says they are harmful, I prefer to avoid them anyway.

Another advantage of organic milk is that it is proven to have up to 50% higher levels of Vitamin E, omega 3 fatty acids and anti-oxidants over regular milk.

While there is no concrete evidence that all of the hormones, antibiotics and pesticides really cause health problems, I am going with my gut and sticking to organic milk. I like having the peace of mind knowing he is not consuming all of those extra chemicals. This is important especially with toddlers and young children because milk is such a huge part of their diet, and is the key factor for them to grow up big and strong.

Note: The only other organic food we give him is apple juice and apple sauce. Most fruits are sprayed with pesticides, but apples in particular can be sprayed up to 20 times during their time on the farm. I can̢۪t find the article, but I remember reading in Parade magazine that if you can only go organic on certain foods, apples and milk should be the first choices.

Here are some great resources with more detailed information about organic milk:
